もともとマティスが芸術家を志したのは、大病から回復中の 20歳の時でした。彼に取ってのアートとは心身の 癒しであり、いわゆる過激な政治的なメッセージを含んだり、小難しい作品ではありませんでした。いつまでも 心を委ねられる「肘掛け椅子」だったのです。
作家が創造した世界に心から浸ることのできる1枚の絵。時によって、それは静かな風景画、色彩豊かな複雑な 抽象画、あるいは不思議な人物画かもしれません。コロナ禍で不安な状況が続いているからこそ、純粋で、自分の すべてを包みこんでくれるアートを人々は欲するのでしょう。
今回の展示は、アートに造詣をお持ちの方々にもお願いして、気になっている若手作家、もう少し知られてもいい のではと思われる作家たち5人と1アートユニットの作品を推薦していただきました。少しずつ賑わい取り戻して いる六本木・赤坂界隈を行き交う人々に、一枚でもお気に入りの「肘掛け椅子」を見つけていただければ幸いです。

What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter, an art which could be for every mental worker, for the businessman as well as the man of letters, for example, a soothing, calming influence on the mind, something like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue. -Henri Matisse
Matisse decided to become an artist when he was 20 years old, recuperating from an illness. For Matisse, art was a therapy. It was never meant to be a radical pollical message or an arcane intellectual puzzle because, for Matisse, art was a cozy armchair where he can safely rest his heart and mind.
What is an artwork that can sweep us from our daily life? Depending on our frame of mind, it can be a serene landscape, colorful and complex abstract picture, or strange portrait. Maybe because we are still living in the Covid-ridden world, we crave to see genuine, engaging art more than ever.
In this show, we have asked people who are familiar with the local art world to recommend artists who are young and emerging or who deserve more attention - they came up with five artists and one artist duo. We hope that people out in the busy streets of Roppongi and Akasaka will take time to stop and look at the pictures. Perhaps they may find their own 'armchair'.
